Is Software asset management (SAM) integrated into your CMDB - if not why not?
Tuesday 12 April 2011
Presented by Ian Preskett and Brian Scott
The presentation will investigate the current placement of software asset management (SAM) with traditional configuration management and look at how the attainment of an integrated asset management system is enhanced by the use of SAM best practice. It will review the following:
- What is SAM?
- Data shared between SAM and the CMDB
- Audit and verification of data
- Value of single source of data
- Tools and technologies
- CMS operational efficiency
- The SAM data that must be captured
- How licensing models affect the data.
Ian Preskett is an experienced Software Asset Management (SAM) consultant with many years of experience across IT and 13 years in SAM. Ian has worked with clients ranging from 600 to 100,000 PCs to assess the current processes, agree a strategy, create a design and implement the solution.
Ian’s philosophy is to ensure that SAM processes integrate with the service management processes to deliver highly effective SAM and reduce risk by maintaining software license compliance. All of Ian’s engagements are conducted in line with the ISO 19770-1 SAM standard and the ITIL V3 framework. He is currently assisting with the introduction of the tiered version of ISO 19770-1 and the ISO 19770-4 SAM maturity standard.
Brian Scott is a Service and System Management IT Consultant and Director at Service Management Connect Ltd. He has over 24 years IT and Telecoms experience including 21 Years MoD in various posts in the UK and abroad covering Service and System Management engineering and operations. An ITIL V3 Expert, ITIL ICT Infrastructure Manager (Orange Book) and ITIL Service Manager (Red Badge) Brian is also an active member of the Configuration Management Specialist Group and Treasurer of the Service Manager SG.
Having spent the last 4 years in industry delivering solutions and implementations for large Managed Service projects, including toolsets and process for Configuration Management Systems with Software Asset and Licensing requirements, he is keenly aware of the difficulties in data gathering and tieing in the disparate groups which manage licensing data as opposed to IT configuration data.
With this in mind Brian studied best practice SAM to look how partnering with SAM practitioners could enhance the CMS/CMDB implementation.
